TABLETS

In a time when technology has expanded global communication to an unprecedented degree, contemporary culture is resurrecting ancient terms such as “tablet” and “scroll”. Emojis hearken back to the earliest forms of written language. In this complex state where contemporary and ancient writing forms seem to merge, I created the Tablet series in ceramic, referencing Mesopotamian inscriptions on clay, the earliest surviving form of writing. The Tablets explore the enduring drive each generation has to record thoughts through symbols.

The pictograms of each Tablet lead the viewer through variable personal associations, never supporting a single objective meaning. Each person brings their own history to their reading of the Tablets, ultimately experiencing the way their brain creates meaning for them. Even in culturally sanctioned vocabularies, these personal associations are central to the way we read, make meaning and ultimately attempt to communicate the deepest parts of ourselves.
